Biografía
Estrella de cine estadounidense, también productor, guionista y director. Hermano menor de la actriz Shirley MacLaine, nació en Richmond, Virginia. Después de abandonar sus estudios en la Universidad de Northwestern, estudió interpretación con Stella Adler. Trabajó en el teatro y la televisión hasta que debutó en el cine, ya como protagonista, con Esplendor en la hierba (1961) de Elia Kazan. Sus primeras películas fueron Su propio infierno (1962) y Acosado (1965). En 1967 se hizo famoso con Bonnie y Clyde, a la que siguieron dos nominaciones al Oscar. Sus mejores interpretaciones en esos años fueron en los largometrajes Los vividores (1971) de Robert Altman, y El último testigo (1974) de Alan J. Pakula, tras la que intentó asumir el control creativo de sus películas. Un ejemplo de esto fueron Shampoo (1975), dirigida por Hal Ashby, la comedia El cielo puede esperar (1978), que obtuvo cuatro nominaciones al Oscar, y Rojos (1981). Esta última es una recreación histórica de la vida del periodista John Reed y ganó un Oscar a la mejor dirección y el aplauso de la crítica. Durante las décadas de 1980 y 1990, ha desarrollado proyectos para otros directores, como el fracaso crítico y comercial Ishtar (dirigida por Elaine May, 1987), o la adaptación del cómic Dick Tracy (1990), que también protagonizó junto a la cantante Madonna. En 1991 protagonizó junto a su futura mujer Annette Bening Bugsy, de Barry Levinson, retrato de un gángster de Hollywood que obtuvo dos nominaciones al Oscar. Más tarde también trabajó con su esposa en Love Affair (1994) una nueva versión de Tú y yo. Beatty ha participado activamente a favor del partido demócrata estadounidense (especialmente en las presidenciales del 1972 en apoyo del candidato George McGovern); sus películas más destacadas son, en general, una aguda reflexión sobre los valores de la sociedad americana.
